IB Maths Tutor Online: AA vs AI, HL vs SL, and What Actually Moves Grades
"I need an IB Maths tutor" usually gets said after a student's grade has already stalled — often because the course itself was set up wrong for them from day one, not because they're bad at maths. The IB Maths curriculum has two distinct courses and two levels, and mismatches between the two are one of the most common, most fixable reasons a capable student is stuck at a 4 or 5 instead of a 6 or 7.
AA or AI? The choice most students never actually made
Analysis & Approaches (AA) is built around algebraic proof, calculus theory, and abstract reasoning — it rewards students who like working through a problem symbolically, step by step. Applications & Interpretation (AI) is built around modelling, statistics, and technology-driven problem solving — it rewards students who think in terms of real data and graphical intuition. Plenty of students are placed into AA by default because it "sounds more rigorous," when AI would actually suit how they think and would score higher for the same amount of effort. HL vs SL isn't just "more content"
Higher Level doesn't just add topics on top of Standard Level — it changes the depth of reasoning expected, especially in proof-based questions and the notoriously difficult Paper 3 (HL only), which is an extended, unfamiliar investigative problem rather than a set of discrete questions. Students who were comfortable with SL-style questions often struggle with Paper 3 not because they don't know the maths, but because they've never practised sustained, multi-step reasoning under exam time pressure. That's a trainable skill, and it's one of the highest-leverage things structured tutoring can target directly.
The Internal Assessment is graded differently than students expect
The IA rewards genuine mathematical exploration — a real question the student investigated — not a longer homework problem with more decimal places. Markers are explicitly looking for personal engagement, reflection, and mathematical communication, and a huge number of otherwise strong students lose marks here simply because nobody explained what "exploration" actually means in IB's marking criteria. A tutor who has actually marked or reviewed IAs against the official criteria can usually add more to a final grade here than in any single content topic.
Command terms decide whether you get the marks
"Show that," "hence," "justify," and "verify" each require a specific type of answer, and IB examiners mark strictly against them — a mathematically correct answer that ignores the command term structure still loses marks. This is exam technique, not maths ability, and it's exactly the kind of gap that's invisible to a student (they got the right number) but obvious to anyone reviewing past paper responses against the mark scheme.
